I started working at the hostel today. I had to get up at 7 (with a little bit of jet lag it felt like 3 am) but they were nice and let me eat breakfast even though I was there just on time to start. From my room, the lobby is just down the hall which is perfect because the lobby is also a really nice cafe. I started working in the cafe by helping with breakfast and help make coffees. Once breakfast finished (10) I went helped with housekeeping until about 1. it wasn't too bad, but I much prefer the cafe.
I realized today that 'free hostel food' is mainly just breakfast food all day long. I will probably get tired of bagels, cheese, cucumbers and cold eggs but it worth saving money to rent a car to drive up to the west fjords (I will go into more detail about that when the time comes).
After eating lunch (aka second breakfast) I took off on another adventure into Reykjavik. This time I set off to find a woollen pullover. To my surprise, new ones cost about 300$ ( 29,000 ISK). I can buy them used in second hand stores but those are still about 9,000ISK (90$).
I continued down the highway to the big art museum, but decided not to see the art once I found out it was 1,000 ISK. Looking back on it I should have just done it. I then headed off for the Pearl.
(the Pearl)
As I approached the Pearl, the sun was shinning and the mountains were visible. I decided to hold the pictures until I was on top the geothermal tanks so I could get a better view. By the time I got onto the look out, it was snowing like crazy and nothing was visible. Here's the best I could get.
The mountains aren't visible at all. Although my hostel is at the left of the picture right on the water. Great location!!
At one point the sun started to appear. But in this picture you can easily see what was following.
So far this is very typical Icelandic weather!
One good thing that came out of the view was I found a very magical spot! I noticed smoke coming from it so I walked down from the pearl and to this well-like area
It was totally surrounded by rocks and moss. The view from the opposite side was really pretty because the sun was out but it was being chased by a dark front of clouds.
At this point, I was getting really tired of walking around, and with the disappointing weather, I ended up walking back downtown is a bad mood. As I entered the outskirts of the old city, I decided to throw some Sigur Ros on, and they completely changed my mood. Their music fits in perfectly with the Icelandic scenery and the vibe of Reykjavik.
Seeing as I was in a better mood, I decided to check out the church
Although the inside is quite plain, it still had a really big impact on me. The second I walked in, the climax of Ni Batteri came on and it was a really nice way to walk into something so vast. The only thing that really decorated the church was a really unique organ hanging one the wall. The services are open at the church to anyone who wants to join Sunday mornings. I think I might just have to. You can also pay to go to the top of the clock tower which is also a must on my list. Here's the inside:
And the organ
Quick side note, Reykjavik has lots of amazing graffiti
sounds like you have had a busy day! That church is interesting...any particular denomination? I hope that there is other food you can eat besides breakfast...although breakfast can be delicious! Take good care of yourself...the weather is much the same here!!!...Aunt Char

ReplyDeleteHi Dyl ~ Dad and I are just sitting around the kitchen table catching up on your day. The church is stunning - would love to hear the organ fill that space - Easter Sunday would be the perfect time to visit!
