Last weekend Michelle and I hitch hiked up to Akureyri. Michelle is the new volunteer who is helping out around the hostel, and she happens to be from Hamilton! We didnt have a place to stay because the hostel was booked for the weekend, so we decided going to Akureyri would be a good way to see some more of Iceland and have a place to stay.
Hitch hiking was easy. the first five cars took us small distances to get out of Reykjavik so we had a better chance of finding someone who was going up to Akureyri (its about 4 hours north of Reykjavik). It was a very windy day, but we were dropped off at some pretty cool places!

The second last girl was a university student. She drove us for a good half an hour to her university just past Borganes. This school was in a lava field beside a few mountains in the middle of nowhere. The closest town is Borganes, which is about half an hour away. There could probably only be about 200 students in the whole school. The girl told us sometimes in the winter when the weather gets bad no one will leave the school for days at a time. Michelle and I stopped here for a soup and coffee in the cafeteria before we headed back into the cold.

We eventually got picked up by two metal heads, Kris and Eddie. The ended up driving us all the way to Akureyri. We hung out with them all weekend which was also nice because they drove us all the way home once our trip was over.
This part of the drive was the best part of the trip. Once we turned to drive through the last stretch of mountains before Akureyri was when all the scenic things happened. It was snowing really hard that the only that that wasn't white was the road in front of us. On either sides all we could see were white mountains. It was really amazing.

We finally made it to Akureyri. Akureyri is the second biggest city next to Reykjavik. Its situated at then end of a fjord in the very north of Iceland. What a boring city it was. Everything was closed. The only fun thing was hitch hiking and partying with Kris and Eddie.
Finally, we left.
That was our trip. My advice, don't go to Akureyri
However, when we were in Akureyri, the volcano erupted! check out this site to see some pictures. It never hit Reykjavik. An ash cloud was approaching and I could see it over the city but it must have just miss us. The next morning walking around the city we could feel the ash in our lungs and eyes though.
